The history of coffee goes back as far as the thirteenth century although the exact origin of it does remain a mystery although most agree that it was somewhere in Africa. From its African roots it then spread through the Middle East before then starting to move along the various trade roots and therefore across the world.
It did not take the form of roasted coffee beans until it reached the Middle East and the type we are most familiar with is believed to have been created in the fifteenth century. Before this it is has been recognised that certain tribes knew the powers the plant and bean had but it was used in a much less refined way.
The real expansion of it as a drink does appear to be largely due to the Dutch East India company which really used its trade links to bring coffee beans from various parts of the world to towns and cities in various countries. This in part led to the creation of plantations which then led to the various types of beans that we now see on a regular basis.
It should be added that it has not always been well received as a drink and in several countries it was actually banned several centuries ago. This ban was because people were afraid of its ability to apparently get rid of feeling tired so it was felt they had to do this in order to protect people.
The first real drink was the mocha but as it spread different regions started to create their own versions which eventually led to the mixture of drinks you can buy today. However the roots all lead back to the same beginnings and a small, powerful shot of caffeine being ingested in a drink.
Coffee beans are now grown in numerous countries around the world but the powerhouses behind its production have not really changed in the last two hundred years. It has now established itself as one of the top selling hot beverages in existence and shall continue to hold this position due to our love of caffeine.
