Since first introduced to the western world coffee has become the beverage that fuels the working masses and soothes the stress and strain of hectic modern day living. Thousands of people cannot function in the morning without their first cup of this beverage and even late at night it is consumed to relax.
Coffee has been enjoyed since the 15th century and remains the most consumed beverage in the world. Everywhere around the globe in homes, the workplace, on sidewalk cafes and fancy restaurant on roads, rail, sea and air this aromatic beverage is consumed in vast quantities on a daily basis.
It is cultivated in over 70 countries in Africa, Southern parts of Asia and South America. The beans that are dried and roasted are found in berries grow on evergreen bushes and trees. Nowadays there are various species that are commercially grown on vast plantations.
Flavor, aroma, body and acidity or the bitter taste varies in beans from different countries and even regions within countries. The drying and roasting methods vary and depending on their intensity the final flavor will be determined.
Additional to plain there are also flavored ones to be had. Popular choices include vanilla, liquor flavors, cinnamon, caramel and peppermint. The purists believe that brewing the perfect cup takes time and skill and should not be rushed.
Often ordering a cup can be a confusing experience as there are so many types to choose from. Turkish and Greek which is strong with fine sediment, Espresso thick and dark, lattes that are either thin or double and cappuccino to name a few. Methods of preparation include brewing, percolating, dripping and plunging. Sold as whole beans or fine, medium and coarse ground for brewing or in instant coffee powders it is a huge import and export product enjoyed by millions daily.
