If you're thinking of starting a business selling coffee - whether you're planning on going toe-to-toe with Starbucks, or just selling cappuccinos to commuters from a parked trailer outside a railway station - you'll need to use the best coffee machines you can afford.
Like any other business, there are a host of things to consider before you even start trading - and your chances of success are slim if you don't think about things like your business plan, your financing and your menu. But without a good coffee machine, your business is destined to fail.
Things to consider before coffee machines
It's worth looking at some of those other factors before you blow your budget on a high-quality coffee machine.
You'll need to consider:
- Your market and the critical question of location. Places with a high volume of people passing by, especially early in the morning, are often good locations for a coffee business. Most obvious places will already have a coffee outlet - or two, or possibly more
- Your budget: selling coffee can be a relatively cheap investment compared with other businesses. Planning your finances is still crucially important, though. Remember you'll need to calculate two things: how much will be needed for the up-front costs before you start trading, and how much will be needed as "operating capital". Cash is king, and many good businesses with lots of potential have failed without it
- Your menu may be dictated largely by the size of your budget and your premises. If you can't store anything apart from coffee beans, sugar, milk and stirrers then you won't be selling much apart from coffee. But if you can afford to, adding some food items to the menu might prove profitable
- Your marketing: getting people to choose your coffee over someone else's will take skill and effort. Some businesses spend millions of pounds each year on marketing - but you can do a lot on your own
You'll also need to consider things like whether planning permission or any kind of permit is required before you start selling coffee.
Everything else being equal, your business will succeed on the quality of your coffee. And to make the best cup, you need to use the best beans - and the best coffee machines .
Researching coffee machines essential
This is one area where the importance of research cannot be underestimated. You need to take your time, find out what others think, compare brands, models and prices - but always keep quality and reliability your main priorities. Your coffee machine needs to make good coffee, but if it's broken it can't make any - and you won't make any money.
Another reason for investing in a quality coffee machine is that for many people a cup of coffee is more than a refreshing pick-me-up drink. It is an experience to be savoured - and the noise of the espresso percolating or the milk frothing, and even just the sight of a chrome coffee machine, are all part of the experience to be enjoyed.
But mainly, you need a good coffee machine to make good coffee. And that's what running a good coffee business should be all about.
