Experts predict that tasseomancy - the art of divining the future in coffee grounds - will replace reading tea leaves as Britain's number one fortune-prediction technique. Forget rosy lee; coffee supplies a much better way of looking into the future.
Well, perhaps. Given that reading tea leaves is Britain's national fortune-telling pastime, the humble coffee grounds have got some catching up to do. But in the meantime - and to help it on its way - here's a beginners guide to waking up and reading the coffee.
Tasseomancy arrives with coffee supplies
The official website of Lavazza, the Italian coffee supplies company, says that Tasseomancy arrived in the West from the orient in the late 17th century (or around the same time the first coffee supplies turned up in Europe) and "is still widely known and practised in Southern Italy, especially by elderly ladies who learned it during the 1950s."
The word evolves from the French "tasse", meaning cup, suggesting that the practice was brought to Europe by Frenchmen trading with the Ottoman Empire (modern-day Turkey and the Balkans). To carry out the best tasseomancy reading, follow these five steps:
- make (and drink) a cup of coffee, using only the best coffee supplies - including finely ground coffee beans
- if there aren't any coffee grounds at the bottom of your cup, add some (it's hard to get an accurate reading without them)
- place your saucer over your cup and turn it upside-down so most of the coffee grounds fall on the saucer
- remove the saucer and look at the coffee grounds left in the cup
- interpret what you see
Coffee supplies the answers
According to the mrcoffee.com website, these are some of the shapes you may see in your grounds, together with their meaning:
- apple: achievement
- bird: good news
- cross: suffering, sacrifice
- dog: good friend
- elephant: wisdom, strength, luck
- fish: good fortune
- grapes: happiness
- heart: pleasure, love, trust
- horseshoe: good luck
- knife: broken friendship
- ladder: promotion, a rise in life
- letters: refers to names
- numbers: span of time
- question mark: need for caution
- snake: an enemy, but also wisdom
- star: health and happiness, hope
- tree: improvements
- waterfall: prosperity
There may be some confusion as to how a coffee-grounds picture of an apple differs to that of a grape, or how a question mark differs from a snake - or, for that matter, how an elephant differs from a waterfall. But one of the beauties of tasseomancy is that you do the interpreting yourself. Wisdom, strength and luck, or prosperity? You decide.
Of course, the best thing of all about tasseomancy - if carried out according to the above instructions - is that you get to drink a cup of coffee, using only the best coffee grounds, at the start of it. I bet the tea-leaf readers never saw that one coming.
