Starbucks may have triggered the coffee revolution in America and the UK, but recent reports show it came bottom of the high street coffee test. Commercial coffee machines in most coffee shops are so adept and high tech, that it’s virtually impossible to make a poor cuppa. Nevertheless, a survey of cafes in Britain showed that Starbucks sold coffee that was over-priced and poor quality according to the leading consumer group, Which?
Commercial coffee machines cater to mass tastes
The coffee shop had an image of being a more sophisticated and healthier alternative to the fast food joints such as McDonalds and Burger King. But even that has been dented as research shows that Starbucks is in fact fat-laden and calorific. Commercial coffee machines can help produce coffee that caters to all tastes, but the big chains need to remember that great coffee is at the heart of their success.
Commercial coffee machines: £900 million industry
Despite the criticisms from consumer groups, commercial coffee machines represent big business in the UK, which now has a £900 million-a-year coffee shop industry. However, some fear that some of the leading chains have taken their success for granted as the consumer group gave Starbucks a measly 1.5 out of five for its coffee, stating that its Americano was weak, and its cappuccino, too frothy. But the fact that Caffe Nero received four out of five stars for its coffee proves commercial coffee machines can make high quality brews.
Counting the coffee cost
However, it seems the branding comes at a cost. Commercial coffee machines produce just as good coffee in small independent cafes than the big chains. But the researchers found that a cappuccino in a small coffee shop was a third cheaper than one purchased in a chain. Commercial coffee machines mean all kinds of cafes can have access to creating superior, authentic coffee. But it seems consumers still love the big high street names. As well as indulging in highly calorific coffee and coffee snacks, consumers are willing to shell out more on a cuppa in Starbucks: researchers found that a coffee, sandwich and pastry in a chain cost around £8 in leading chains, but just £6 in independent cafes.
