If the caffeine in what the Canadian press calls "the best coffee in the world" doesn't wake you up, the price will. An espresso bar in Halifax, Nova Scotia, is combining $180-a-pound coffee beans and a $12,000 commercial coffee machine to produce one of the most expensive coffees in North America.

For $20 (around  £10), the Smiling Goat Organic Espresso Bar will use their state-of-the-art commercial coffee machines to make you a shot from the latest harvest of Panama Hacienda La Esmeralda Special coffee beans.

Best beans, best commercial coffee machines

The Esmeralda beans - almost all 500 pounds-worth produced this year - have been selling at auction for around $130 US dollars (about  £65), unroasted. Roasted beans - if you can get them - are going for about $180.

The Smiling Goat procured two pounds (one kilogram) of Esmeralda - and the newly opened bar has secured some valuable press attention as a result. It gave away 10 cups in a promotion, has sold ten cups - and also used a further two cups worth in testing their new, exclusive, computerised Clover commercial coffee machine.

The commercial coffee machines cost around $12,000 ( £6,000) wholesale - and need calibrating to produce the perfect espresso.

Test commercial coffee machines for coffee that wows

Smiling Goat owner Geoffrey Creighton thought it was worth using the $130-a-pound beans on the test runs, according to www.canada.com.

"It was a bit of a pill to have to swallow having to test the expensive coffee on the machine," the website quotes Creighton as saying, "but there's no sense bringing it in unless we're going to serve a cup of coffee that wows you."

The prices raised by the Esmeralda beans are seen as evidence for a growing market in small single-estate coffee harvests - similar to vineyards in the world of fine wines.

Buyers of commercial coffee machines are finding increasingly willing groups of customers willing to pay for coffee made with the exclusive beans. It can take a long time to get a return on that $12,000 investment, but it's a lot faster when you're selling $20 espressos.
