Most people are familiar with the ordinary automatic drip brewer but many are unaware that there are several ways to make coffee . Each method requires a different type of equipment and has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Automatic drip brewers are by far the most popular. Grounds go into a wedge or basket shaped filter and water pours slowly through the grounds a single time. The result is a clear, smooth beverage. Manual drip makers work the same way but the user pours the water by hand instead of leaving it to the machine.

A French press uses infusion to brew a hardy beverage. The user pours medium coarse ground beans into the press and adds hot water. A plunger presses the grounds toward the bottom and separates them from the liquid. The liquid is dense and takes on the full flavor of the beans.

An electric espresso machine injects water with steam pressure or by piston directly to the cup through finely ground beans. This method produces a beverage covered by a layer of foam known as crema.

True aficionados prefer the vacuum brewing method to produce a smooth beverage with a complex flavor. The equipment consists of a carafe and a funnel that fits on top. After filling the funnel with coarse ground beans and the carafe with water, the user heats the water to a near boil. The device sucks the water into the funnel and as it cools, the liquid runs back to the carafe leaving the grounds behind.

Effective brewing equipment will capture the aroma and flavor from whatever beans are used. Each method produces a beverage with its own unique characteristics. People will typically choose a brewing method based on personal preference and how much work they want to put into making their coffee .
