If you want a perfect espresso every time you make a coffee , experts agree that you need freshly-ground beans. And for freshly-ground beans you need a grinder, and the better your grinder, the better your coffee will be - which is why many experts would recommend a coffee grinder from a market-leading company like Gaggia.

You can, of course, buy coffee beans pre-ground, put them in your Gaggia coffee machine and brew up great espresso. But pre-ground beans quickly lose the richness of their flavour, making grinding your own beans with a grinder from a company like Gaggia the key to making the best cup of coffee.

What type of grinder?

Broadly speaking, there are three types of grinder: the hand-mill, which is slow, tiresome and doesn't deliver the best results; the blade grinder, which is the most common kind produced by Gaggia and other companies, and the burr grinder.

Gaggia blade grinders work on the same principle as blenders and food mixers: they cut the beans with whirling blades. This is reasonably effective, although it can lead to inconsistently ground beans - not good for making espresso - and the friction of the blades can burn the beans which will spoil the flavour of the coffee.

Gaggia burr grinders use spinning discs to grind the coffee beans. They are slower than Gaggia blade grinders, but do not burn the coffee and produce a more consistent grind.

Which grinders do Gaggia make?

Gaggia are one of the market leaders for making coffee grinders, with a reputation for a consistent grind quality and for being built to last.

The Gaggia ML is a blade grinder, while the Gaggia MM is a burr grinder suitable for most uses. The Gaggia MDF is also a burr grinder and is the choice of many professional baristas.
