Coffee is one of the most prized morning rituals of many people. The beans of this plant are found in the berry or the cherry of the plant. The beans then are processed into many different brewing formats. The beans can easily be ground into a powder-like substance that is then brewed with boiling water to create a much loved beverage that is perfect for the morning or any time of day.
Contrary to popular beliefs that this stimulant increases alertness, new studies have concluded that for people who drink this beverage on a regular basis, no energy boost or change in alertness level could be recorded. They found that even though most coffee drinkers experience a feeling of alertness when having their morning cup, the actual phenomenon that they are experiencing is the reversing of their acute caffeine withdrawal symptoms. The more of this beverage that one consumes, the more he or she needs to consume it.
The study's findings are in support of the theory that one's body can quickly develop a dependence on caffeine. This dependence creates a need for caffeine just to maintain normal levels of alertness. This being said, it follows that if a regular caffeine consumer stops drinking it, he or she will actually turn out to be less alert by non-consumption, not more alert by consumption.
Despite these findings that were heavily corroborated by independent double blind studies, a spokesman for BCA doubted the study's findings. He stated that caffeine does in fact raise alertness levels and that in moderation is safe to consume. One is then left to judge for him- or herself what his or her daily caffeine intake should be.
One thing to note is that pregnant women should consume no more than 200 milligrams of coffee per day. If one is pregnant, she should speak to her physician about her caffeine consumption. Only one's physician can tell one what his or her individual caffeine intake should be.
