Traditional coffee machines have only be around since around the 1940’s, when Achilles Gaggia introduced his new coffee machine. coffee itself, however, has been around since the 15th Century and drunk regularly in the intermittent 600 years in a variety of forms.

Traditional coffee machines

The coffee shrub from which coffee heralds originated in Arabia and was thought to have been formulated during 15th Century pilgrimages to Mecca when they regularly drank an infusion of the roasted coffee bean to avoid drowsiness during long religious services. So, without these pilgrimages to Mecca, there would be no commercial coffee machines today. After forming popularity in Arabia, the drink of coffee quickly found favour in Constantinople (now Istanbul), Venice and a variety of European cities.

Traditional Coffee Machines – Coffee In The United Kingdom

Long before ‘Starbucks’ and ‘Costa Coffee’, London was first though to boast a coffee house in 1652 and they soon became an integral part of the political and social life of England (so much so that Charles II tried to suppress them). Of course, this early coffee house would have used rudimentary coffee making methods as they were long before traditional coffee machines entered the fray.

Traditional Coffee Machines – An Ever Increasing Trade

By the end of the 18th Century there were over 5000 coffee houses in London and the dawn of traditional coffee machines was getting ever closer as demand for the drink grew and grew. These coffee houses soon established themselves as hubs of social activity and attracted all manner of clientele from actors to politicians of the day.

Traditional Coffee Machines – The Gaggia Effect

It wasn’t until the Italian engineer, Achilles Gaggia, came about that traditional coffee machines really took hold. He came up with his idea for a espresso coffee machine in 1938 but the mass production of it was affected by the onset of World War II and it wasn’t until the 1950’s that its popularity positively skyrocketed. Traditional coffee machines are everywhere nowadays from Costa Coffee to the kitchens of trendy homes up and down the UK.
