Espressos or espresso coffee is the beverage made from forcing very hot water (but not boiling) in high pressure through coffee that has been grounded into a very fine powder. The liquid that drips out from this process is the espresso coffee .

Where did espresso coffee originate from?

Espresso coffee was first made in Italy in Milan in the 20th Century. Back then they made it slightly differently than they do today by using steam, it was only till the 1940s that they use hot water instead.

How do you make espresso coffee?

Today you can buy espresso machines to make espresso coffee (sometimes referred to as ‘pulling a shot of coffee’). Today these machines are quite popular to have in homes or in coffee shops and restaurants as they are not that expensive and there is an increasing demand for the drink. In fact espresso is the most popular type of coffee in most of southern Europe (Italy, France, Spain and Portugal). It is also very popular around the world, In Australia and New Zealand espresso accounts for nearly all commercial café, coffee house and restaurant coffee business. In Italy, and in most of Europe, ordering a coffee means ordering an espresso.

There are many different ways of making espresso coffee, all are similar in that the process is the same, but slight variations of the process create different tastes. Many people have ideas about how to achieve the best espresso drink with tips and advice for example not to use roast dark coffee as it can be quite bitter in taste but to use roast light for a much sweeter taste.

Where did the name come from?

According to the Anglo American dictionary the term espresso refers to ‘pressed out’ which describes the process of how the espresso coffee is made. In English the word espresso relates to the word ‘express’ which gives an idea of ‘quickly’ and ‘just for you’ which again in turn describes the coffee making process.
