COFFEE NEWS
Gaggia – Coffee lingo explained

Gaggia coffee machines can make a vast array of coffees that can leave even the seasoned latte drinker in a spin. If you’re not familiar with the different types of coffee, it can even be a little intimidating walking into a coffee shop. You might even end up just ordering what you know, simply because you’re not sure what’s on offer.

Gaggia is a coffee maker that specialises in commercial coffee machines, it’s likely that your local coffee shop features a Gaggia machine. Gaggia machines can produce an array of coffees, the most popular include:

  • Cappuccino

Gaggia machines are probably worked the most when it comes to this favourite classic. The standard should be 1/3 of espresso, 1/3 of steamed milk, 1/3 frothed milk: topped off with chocolate powder.

  • Latte

A latte is another Gaggia classic. Lattes are simply a liberal amount of steamed milk added to an espresso, ideal for the coffee lover who likes a gentle, warming drink.

  • Café au Lait

This is simply freshly brewed coffee with an equal portion of steamed milk; café au lait is French for coffee with milk.

  • Macchiato:

Any Gaggia coffee lover will tell you the espresso is key to getting any style of coffee right. A Macchiato is an espresso with a dollop of steamed milk foam on top.

  • Con Panna:

For the more indulgent: an espresso with a dollop of whipped cream on top.

  • Americano:

If you love the Gaggia taste, but don’t want the milky, creamy fat, the Americano is a great alternative – it’s simply an espresso in a coffee cup filled with hot water, so great for those watching their calories.

  • Café Mocha:

If you want a caffeine hit, but want to take the bitter edge off, the Café Mocha is ideal; it’s a mix of chocolate with espresso and steamed milk topped with whipped cream.

As well as the different types of coffee, there’s a whole coffee shop jargon that you might find in a Gaggia coffee shop:

  • A double, implies too shots of coffee.
  • Grande is the size of the cup (large, 16oz).
  • Crema is the dense golden brown foam found on espresso and a sign of a good Gaggia machine: it’s an indication of freshness.
  • A skinny coffee means it will be made with semi skimmed milk.
